In 2001 President Bush promised to return integrity to our federal government. The memo he circulated on January 20th begins with:
Everyone who enters into public service for the United States has a duty to the American people to maintain the highest standards of integrity in Government. I ask you to ensure that all personnel within your departments and agencies are familiar with, and faithfully observe, applicable ethics laws and regulations.
Six and a half years later the public learns Bush's words are empty, vacuous, hollow. After turning over visitor records indicating Jack Abramoff's numerous visits to the White House, the President and Secret Service signed an agreement as to the future handling of such records. The end result is the public no longer has a right to know who darkens the door of key Bush officials.
Promoting transparent, accountable governance is a critical component of our freedom agenda.
Without the visitor records how is the American public to know if any high level corruption by senior government officials is occurring? The shining light of open and transparent democracy just dimmed further courtesy of Bush's manipulations...
