Americans Still Being Misled on Saddam’s WMD

According to new polls, half of Americans believe Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction despite hard evidence to the contrary. The Bush/Cheney team sent that message for years. Sec. Condi Rice has allowed only that “perhaps” WMD were not in Iraq. Bush continues to spin the myth that he sent troops to Iraq because the dictator locked out U.N. weapons inspectors. Just 4 months ago President Bush stated Saddam “chose to deny inspectors”.

The facts show otherwise. After a four year hiatus, Hussein allowed back in U.N. weapons inspectors. They conducted over 700 inspections of potential weapons sites between November 2002 and March 2003. The U.N. inspectors said they could finish their work in months. The U.S. invasion aborted this work.

In May 2006 at a West Point graduation Bush said “When the United Nations Security Council gave him one final chance to disclose and disarm, or face serious consequences, he refused to take that final opportunity."

Bush went to war because Saddam did not disarm fast enough. And the final results of the investigation of Iraq’s WMD?

After a 16-month, $900-million-plus investigation, the U.S. weapons hunters known as the Iraq Survey Group declared that Iraq had dismantled its chemical, biological and nuclear arms programs in 1991 under U.N. oversight. That finding in 2004 reaffirmed the work of U.N. inspectors who in 2002-03 found no trace of banned arsenals in Iraq.

Americans believe erroneously given the White House spin machine. Most of the WMD believers are Republican. The fiction continues as Fox News on July 21st said with no evidence:

"ARE SADDAM HUSSEIN'S WMDS NOW IN HEZBOLLAH'S HANDS?" asked the headline, lingering for long minutes on TV screens in a million American homes.

How long can our country last if we don’t face facts? Our President lies, is incapable of conducting a competent investigation, cannot perform a basic root cause analysis, and uses four letter words while displaying bad table manners. Where’s Charles Barkley when you need him? The kids need a role model….
