Federal Election Commission Chair to Step Down

Michael E. Toner, Chairman of the Federal Election Commission is stepping down to pursue “unspecified professional opportunities”. One of the last University of Virginia graduates to leave the federal government was Tom Scully. Since his leaving the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Tom made out quite well. Of course he had at least six months to strike his best deal.

Mr. Scully landed at powerhouse lobbying firm Alston & Bird, just down the hall from Senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle. He also became Senior Advisor for Welsh, Carson, Anderson, & Stowe, a private investment house specializing in healthcare. Tom sits on a number of WCAS affiliate boards.

Will Mr. Toner end up with competing lobbying firms Akin, Gump or Baker Botts? Will he find a seat on the Diebold Board of Directors? It will be fun to watch the business and political news to find where Mr. Toner lands.
